On 22 September 2012, MARUAH observed the UN International Day of Peace and participated in celebrations organised by the Jane Goodall Institute at Fort Canning Park, Singapore.
The International Day of Peace is observed every year to commemorate global peace and a cessation of hostility and violence. It was first declared by the United Nations in 1982 and constantly seeks to remind us that ‘our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace’.
This year’s theme ‘Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future’ in line with the Rio+20 Conference, focuses on embracing peace through the cultivation of sustainable resources, energy and practices; paving the road to a sustainable future.
In the face of social uncertainty and adversity, MARUAH believes that it is important for the international community to be receptive and demonstrate commitment to adopt in its capacity the tools established by the UN Charter for the promotion of peace and the peaceful settlement of disputes. MARUAH will continue to offer its support to organisations and participate in efforts aimed at promoting and strengthening the ideals of peace at a national and regional level.
‘The real and lasting victories are those of peace, and not of war’.
