MARUAH’s statement in response to rioting at Little India on 8 Dec 2013

9 December 2013

MARUAH’s statement in response to the rioting at Little India on 8 Dec 2013.

It is sad and tragic that there was a riot in Little India last night where people were hurt and property destroyed. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the worker who died and we hope that justice will be done for him. We are confident that the Coroner’s inquiry will be open and fair and will help bring some relief to his family.

What happened is wrong and attacking civil defence and police officers who are doing their jobs is unacceptable by international human rights norms. Read the rest of this entry »

MARUAH forum letter on disability

3 December 2013

3 December 2013 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. MARUAH submitted a letter to the Straits Times Forum, which was published yesterday.

http://www.straitstimes.com/premium/forum-letters/story/break-barriers-the-disabled-20131202

Break barriers for the disabled
IN CONJUNCTION with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities tomorrow, we wish to draw attention to barriers in our bid to become an inclusive society.

We acknowledge the Government’s efforts in taking on a fairly active approach towards breaking barriers through the Ministry of Social and Family Development’s Enabling Masterplan.

We also note the efforts of the Building and Construction Authority, which has updated the Code on Accessibility for the Built Environment.

However, the Government needs to do more by making physical accessibility a priority in urban planning. Read the rest of this entry »

MARUAH Media Statement – On diminishing space for public discourse in Singapore

29 November 2013

MEDIA STATEMENT

For immediate use

29 November 2013

Dear Editor

We write to express our dismay at the attempt to prosecute Mr Alex Au for contempt of court and the reports about the Media Development Authority (MDA) seeking to regulate online media platforms the Breakfast Network and The Independent Singapore.

The members of MARUAH, as Singapore citizens and human rights activists, are concerned that these actions will further shrink the space for public discourse in Singapore. Robust debate, diverse views, questioning and criticism, as well as a healthy media landscape, are all critical to the development of a functional democracy. Read the rest of this entry »

MARUAH statement on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

25 November 2013

Violence against anyone is a human rights violation. Today, 25th of November is a special day to focus on violence against one group – women. Set aside by the United Nations (UN) as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, this day is one of commitment to stop the violence against women and to affirm that it is NOT right for women and girls to face any form of violence in the home, at school, at the workplace and in the streets. The sobering fact, according to UN, is that globally, seven in 10 women face some form of violence in their lives. In Singapore, research conducted by the International Violence against Women Survey indicated that 9.2% of the 2006 Singaporean women surveyed experienced some form of violence during their adult lives (from the age of 16) . Defending the Legitimacy of Singapore Elections: MARUAH Position Paper on the GRC system

19 August 2013

IMG-20130819-WA0001

MARUAH has published a position paper on the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) system in elections in Singapore.

In this position paper, the second in its electoral reform series, MARUAH approaches the issue of Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) from the standpoint of the right to representative government as well as free and fair elections.

This paper concurs with the goal of ensuring minority representation in Parliament. However it argues that the GRC system is a poor tool to this end because it creates more impediments to electoral and representational fairness than it solves.

Defending the Legitimacy of Singapore Elections: MARUAH Position Paper on Improving Citizen Confidence in the Secrecy of the Ballot

6 February 2013

MARUAH has published a position paper on voter confidence in ballot secrecy during elections in Singapore.

The paper studies the extent of voter confidence in ballot secrecy in Singapore elections and offers way to ensure that secrecy can be enhanced. On the basis of empirical evidence gathered from two surveys, MARUAH is setting out the view that a significant share of Singapore voters – approximately 10% – still cast their vote in fear that their ballots may be traced back to them by the authorities. This erodes the legitimacy of Singapore’s elections, undermines the standing of Parliament and violates the spirit of the 1971 declaration of Commonwealth principles signed by Singapore.

MARUAH sets out recommendations to address this problem so as to defend the perceived integrity of Singapore’s elections and to strengthen political stability by widening social acceptance of electoral outcomes.

International Migrants Day 2012

18 December 2012

Today is International Migrants Day. In 2000 the UN General Assembly proclaimed 18th December as International Migrants Day to raise attention to the rights of the large and increasing number of migrants in the world. In 1990 the General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

In Singapore, MARUAH, a human rights organisation, observes International Migrants Day by commenting on the treatment of foreign workers by employers in Singapore in general, in light of the recent incidents of foreign workers refusing to work. In particular, we encourage Singaporeans and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to give full effect to the new policy of giving a Day Off to foreign domestic workers starting in the 1st week of January 2013. MARUAH: Singapore could have done better as a key coastal state in Rohingya rescue effort

18 December 2012

We refer to the recent denial of entry of the MV Nosco Victory carrying 40 people rescued off the coast of Myanmar.

MARUAH, a human rights group, would like to praise the Captain of the MV Nosco Victory Mr Nguyen Dinh Hoa for rescuing the Rohingyas at sea, saving many lives and observing the honour code among seafarers.

We would also like to make three points for Singaporeans and the Singapore authorities to consider. Read the rest of this entry »

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

17 December 2012

Today is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. MARUAH, as a human rights organisation, stands in solidarity with human rights defenders and sex workers worldwide to observe and commemorate this day, dedicated to the protection of the rights, safety, and dignity of sex workers.

Sex workers in most parts of the world are in a marginalised and discriminated segment of society. Their rights as sex workers include the right to safe sex, right to fair wages, right to protection from abuse, right for sex work to be recognised and be seen as work, right to form associations for mutual support and protection, and the right to not be discriminated against.

In Singapore, despite the presence of licensed brothels, there is a growing community of sex workers who are freelancing. They risk being exploited. MARUAH would like to raise awareness to their plight, even though they are operating outside the licensed brothels.

Some among them as well as those working in licensed brothels may be forced or sold into prostitution. These women and men, usually young, who are identified as trafficked persons, must be given protection, and they should not be criminalised and re-victimised by the authorities, in the process.
